CARBON FIBRE PRODUCTION
Project Type
Manufacturing
Date
April 2023
TOOLS
Easy-release chemicals agent
Core mat
Gum tape
Peel ply
Breather cloth
Epoxy & Hardener
Process
1. Clean/Prep the bed using a rag or a lint-free paper towel
2. Apply the easy release on the bed using a lint-free wipe. Apply about 5 - 7 coats.
3. Tape the surrounding of the material on the bed using dung tape (leaves clits (go up and down) if it’s not a regular shape)
4. Next apply peel ply on the material
5. Apply breather cloth on the assembly (The cuts don’t have to be accurate or straight they just must be cut)
6. Measure and mix the resin and hardener using the ratio by weight using 100:30. For 100g of resin you need 30g of hardener
7. Use the bottle to add the catalyst (hardener)
8. Put some mixture on the bed and use a squeegee or brush to spread it.
9. Afterwards place the first cut out of carbon fiber material on the resin-filled bed surface to form the first layer
10. Dab/ Squeegee the first carbon fiber layer, the resin from underneath will come up.
11. You can add more mixture but make sure you spread lightly because the carbon fiber material will drag and that’s not good.
12. Next place the core mat on the resin-filled carbon fiber layer. Use the same process as the first carbon fiber layer
13. Quick shake before putting the last Caron fiber layer on top to remove any excess materials
14. Next place the last carbon fiber layer on top of the resin-filled core mat surface. Follow the same steps use for the first carbon fiber layer and core mat.
15. Then put the peel ply on top. It doesn’t have to be perfect the vacuum will pull it in.
16. Next the breather cloth goes on top.
17. Next release the casing to reveal the gum tape
18. Leave a space to put the vacuum pump casing when placing the vacuum bag on top
19. Take the vacuum bag and lay it on top. Leave a bit of room and press firmly on the gun tap and make sure there aren’t any creases in the vacuum bag. This can let air in so avoid them. If you want to let air in leave cleats
20. Make a small hole in between the vacuum bag and the casing to connect the vacuum hose but add a gun tape to make sure there is no air leak in between
21. Connect the vacuum and turn it on to drain out all the air. Check for any leaks as well
Finishing
22. Leave the process to cure overnight, and then go ahead and take off the vacuum bag using the gum tape
23. Afterwards take off the breather clothe by using the peel ply underneath it. Cut strips off the peel ply if it does not come off easily
24. The carbon fiber part should then come off easily because we added the easy-release agent at the beginning of the process
25. You can then finally trim the edge or cut it into your desired shape
